Growing up, Ballerini was always involved in her church and school choir. "My whole family loves music but no one was musical. I was kind of the black sheep. I really love it though," Ballerini said. Although her father worked in country radio when she was younger, she spent her time listening to pop music and didn't get into the country genre until she began writing it.
The first time Ballerini heard her song on the radio she was driving in Nashville and immediately started to scream and cry. She was so excited and, of course, recorded herself freaking out on video. Fans always want to know who influences the lyrics any artist puts down on paper. Well, Ballerini wouldn't share exactly who influenced the 5 songs on her EP -- however she did say "Dibs" was her favorite to perform live.
The night before Ballerini’s big show in New Jersey with The Voice star RaeLynn, these two ladies played an event called Girls with Guitars up in Patchogue, New York. It featured seven of the most talented country music stars today including themselves, Maddie & Tae, Lauren Alaina, Katie Armiger, and Kristy Lee Cook. “It is such an exciting time for us. We are all friends and buy each others’ stuff, it’s cool to have that community of girls and be able to talk about what we are going through together,” Ballerini said. Of course it is only natural for these girls to look up to huge country stars such as Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum. Ballerini absolutely adores Scott and hopes to be able to tour with her some day.
What has kept Ballerini going through this amazing journey are her friends, also known as her band. With last year’s 21-week radio tour and her album currently in mixing, she is having the time of her life. People may wonder how someone at such a young age can do it all. “Age is honestly just a number and if you know what you want to do early in life you are really blessed and don’t be scared to pursue it,” Ballerini said.
Kelsea Ballerini is set to make her Grand Ole Opry debut in Nashville, TN this Saturday, February 14.
