Eddie Montgomery – My Son Lyrics

Verse 1
My son, my blood runs through your veins
I don’t mean we’re the same
I know you’re gonna be your own man
My son, sometimes we don’t see eye to eye
I just hope you know that I
Still tried to do the best I can

Chorus
My son please don’t make mistakes
And make, no don’t chase the things I’ve chased
Don’t waste your life on the run
My son, go ahead and spread your wings
While your reaching for your dreams
There’s one thing you can’t outrun
You’ll always be my son

Verse 2
My son as you wished you’d never knew
The past I wish I could undo
But we both know I can’t go back in time
My son, just keep on being who you are
And keep believing in your heart
You’re destined for a better life

Chorus
My son please don’t make mistakes
And make, no don’t chase the things I’ve chased
Don’t waste your life on the run
My son, go ahead and spread your wings
While your reaching for your dreams
There’s one thing you can’t outrun
You’ll always be my son

Chorus
My son please don’t make mistakes
And make, no don’t chase the things I’ve chased
Don’t waste your life on the run
My son go ahead and spread your wings
While your reaching for your dreams
There’s one thing you can’t outrun
You’ll always be my son

Outro
You’ll always be my son
You’ll always be my son

Song Meaning & Review

“My Son” is a heartbreaking song and really, the lyrics goes to show that subtlety has a big factor in making great music. Yes, ok, I know that the song is about a father talking to his son, but what I meant with the subtlety is how the message was conveyed. While the Eddie didn’t say it directly, it is clear that the father has regrets. It probably didn’t end well with his son, maybe the father was always pushing his flawed ideals to his son and the son wanted none of it.

But even if it got kinda messy, you can still see here that the father is telling his child to “spread his wings” and not to repeat the mistake of his father. Because however flawed his character may be, one thing is for certain, he loves his song very much. Maybe he grew up in a different time where “expressing feelings” was not popular.

He goes on to tell his son to not waste the life that was given to him. In a way, he is saying that even he had come from a broken family, that it should not define his life. Because only him can choose what the outcome of the future will be.

The ending of the chorus has a power line that really struck me “There’s one thing you can’t outrun
You’ll always be my son” that one, well I don’t need to explain it really, because to me it has a different meaning and I’m sure that it will have a different one to you too.

I would like to end this song review on saying that no matter where you come from, you should not let it define who you are going to be. We all make mistakes, even our parents. The important thing is YOU. You should take care and love yourself, because the only person that you got is YOU. One can’t start loving another person unless said person learns to love himself first.

Take care y’all!
