Raleigh Keegan – Like My Daddy Was Lyrics

Verse 1
He never gave me his last name
Never gave me anythin’.
My whole life wasn’t all that rough but,
I’ve spent a lot of time growin’ up.
I’m wonderin’ if I’m like my daddy was.

Are his eyes blue like mine?
Did I get his stubborn side?
Is it somethin’ I can overcome?
Or it’s livin’ in my blood?
Was I born, born like my daddy was?

Chorus
I don’t know about him
But I know about me.
This apple fell
Far from the tree.

Someday I’ll have a family
Of my own,
And I’m gonna be there
Steady as stone.

They won’t have to wonder
About my love.
Cuz I ain’t gonna be
Like my daddy was.

Verse 2
I never walked in his shoes
But, he could’ve been
I really want him to.

Was it somethin’ he was hidin’ from?
Maybe he was just young and dumb
Oh maybe he was like his daddy was.

Chorus
I don’t know about him
But I know about me.
This apple fell
Far from the tree.

Someday I’ll have a family
Of my own,
And I’m gonna be there
Steady as stone.

They won’t have to wonder
About my love.
Cuz I ain’t gonna be
Like my daddy was.

Instrumental

Chorus
I don’t know about him
But I know about me.
This apple fell
Far from the tree.

Someday I’ll have a family
Of my own,
And I’m gonna be there
Steady as stone.

They won’t have to wonder
About my love.
Cuz I ain’t gonna be
Like my daddy was.

Outro
There’s a man that I call “dad”
Best one a kid could have.
He raised me right
And made me tough.

He showed me what a real man does.
He ain’t nothin’ like my daddy was.
No, he ain’t nothin’ like my daddy was.

Song Meaning & Review

Here’s a song I can relate to. And I think it’s a wonderful thing how most fruits of a broken family don’t want to end up giving the same for their future children.

This song is about how the artist doesn’t know a thing about his own father. Doesn’t know what he looks like, what he was like, what behavior and features did he get from his dad.

He didn’t even get his father’s last name and he probably doesn’t even know what it was. The fact that he had to wonder all his life about how things would have been had his real dad stayed.

Sure enough, the artist didn’t want his future family to experience the things he had, they don’t want them to have to wonder about his love, about what he’s like, about how he is as a father, because he’s determined to stay and love them with all his heart.

Because he’s determined to not be “like his daddy was.” And at the last part of the song, it’s actually really beautiful and touching how he included the man who stood as his father, raised him right into the man he is today.
