Halle Kearns – Happy in This Bar Lyrics

Verse 1
Gave in, and a quarter til ten
Tore the tags off a brand new dress.
City streets and lives backseat
On a night that I’ll not forget.

Pre-Chorus
I’d be in bed
If it was up to me.
But, hell, I’m here
Guess it’s time to be…

Chorus
Happy in this bar
Just another night
Making everybody think
That I’m alright.

Lead another toast
Fake another smile
Be the life of the party
For a little while.

As long as they don’t know
That I’m so far,
From happy in this bar.

Verse 2
Pressure’s on, time to play along
And keep puttin’ on a show.
Crazy how in a downtown crowd
I can still feel so alone.

Pre-Chorus
But if that’s all
That grew inside of me
They’d understand why it’s
Hard to be…

Chorus
Happy in this bar
Just another night
Making everybody think
That I’m alright.

Lead another toast
Fake another smile
Be the life of the party
For a little while.
As long as they don’t know
That I’m so far,
From happy in this bar.

Post-Chorus
Mmm mmm mmm mmm
Happy in this bar.

Chorus
Happy in this bar
Just another night
Making everybody think
That I’m alright.

Lead another toast
Fake another smile
Be the life of the party
For a little while.
As long as they don’t know
That I’m so far,
Yeah, they’re never gonna know
That I’m so far…
From happy in this bar.

Post-Chorus
Mmm mmm
Happy in this bar.

I gave in, and a quarter to ten
Tore the tags off a brand new dress.

Song Meaning & Review

This country song reminded me a lot about how Taylor Swift sang her songs in her first few albums. And for me, I personally love this song. It stroke me as a song conveying how lonely life can be in a city.

This can most likely relate to a country boy or girl like the singer. But this can also relate to people out there who needed to leave their hometown to pursue their dreams, go to college, or maybe to those who needed to find a stable job in a different city or maybe even a different country to provide for their family. Most of them would be Skyping or video calling their folks in their hometown, missing them, but at the same time faking a smile for them.

Then again, this song could literally convey the feelings of someone feeling very lonely, and goes to the bar to try and fill that loneliness. Wearing a mask with a smile, but deep inside, they’re still “far from happy in this bar.”

Anyone could literally be the life of the party, and no one would even know or think “Is he/she okay?”, “Is he/she happy?”, “Is this person lonely?”. Because we humans tend to mask or fill our loneliness by going to bars, or other crowded places and yet still feel so alone.
