Natalie Hemby – Lake Air Lyrics

Verse 1
There’s always one
You can never forget.
For the nights you’ve had it
Overshadows all the waste.

There’s a certain call
Plays on your skin.
You remember the feelin’
Of bein’ higher than you’ve ever been.

Chorus
We were silhouettes
Ghosts in the rain
And we almost froze
When we lift our clothes
By the water bank.

Every single word
Felt like a day.
When you kiss my lips
I breathe you in
And kept you there.
Lake air.

Verse 2
There’s a certain sound,
When the world disappears.
And your heart is beating
So hard it’s all you can hear.

I still dream of you in secret.
I still see you on the shore.
You’re out there givin’ me somethin’
And I don’t get it anymore.

Chorus
We were silhouettes
Ghosts in the rain
And we almost froze
When we lift our clothes
By the water bank.

Every single word
Felt like a day.
When you kiss my lips
I breathe you in
And held you there.
Lake air.

Instrumental

Chorus
We were silhouettes
Ghosts in the rain
And we almost froze
When we lift our clothes
By the water bank.

Every single word
Felt like a day.
When you kiss my lips
I breathe you in
And held you there.
Lake air…
Lake air.

Song Meaning & Review

From my standpoint, I think the lyrics of this song is expressing memories of the singer and someone special to her. Those memories apparently happened by the lake, remembering and seeing silhouettes of the two of them doing the things they used to do by the lake. And those memories come back to her at the fresh scent of the lake air.

Calming, refreshing, romantic. The fact that she's still dreaming of that person in secret, and seeing how they used to be by the lake's shore, in the cold lake air where they would kiss leave their clothes by the waterbank to swim or have fun in the water together.

To me, all of these sound so romantic and so lonely at the same time. Remembering those moments and dreaming of that person after all this time, but not being able to do all those things anymore.
