Raleigh Keegan – Our First Goodbye Lyrics

Verse 1
Momma met a man in Birmingham.
They spent the night together.
She was young and he was drunk.
He promised her forever.
After fakin’ love,
He slipped off in the night.

And before you know,
She was startin’ to show,
And head off to prison.
Got locked up for sellin’ drugs.
Just tryin’ to make a living.
Six months later,
December ‘eighty nine.
Our first hello, was our first goodbye.

Chorus
And I can’t help but wonder
Exactly how she felt.
Handin’ off her brand new baby boy
To someone else.
But with her tears on her kiss,
She showed me what love is.
That’s why
Our first hello was our first goodbye.

Verse 2
Little does she know
I’ve found a home
Just north of Cincinnati.
With a mom and dad
Who love me as they were the ones
Who had me.

They gave me everythin’ I need in life.
So I hope she knows,
What she did was right.

Chorus
Cuz I can’t help but wonder
Exactly how she felt.
Handin’ off her brand new baby boy
To someone else.
But with her tears on her kiss,
She showed me what love is.
That’s why
Our first hello was our first goodbye.

Bridge
She’s out there
Thinkin’ ’bout me
Now and then.
And I hope there comes a day
When we can meet again.

Chorus
Cuz I can’t help but wonder
Exactly how she felt.
Handin’ off her brand new baby boy
To someone else.
But with her tears on her kiss,
She showed me what love is.
That’s why
Our first hello was our first goodbye.
Our first goodbye…

Song Meaning & Review

This song is about how the artist’s mother met his father. How his real father promised forever to his mom out of being drunk, but then morning hasn’t even come yet, and he slipped off in the night.

The artist’s mother then got locked up in prison trying to make a living for them both, taking care of him inside her womb no matter what, no matter how hard it was.

After a few more months, came December of 1989, his mother gave birth to him. But then, she had to hand over her new born baby to someone else.

It’s most likely because she felt that she didn’t know if she’d be able to give him the life he deserves. But her kiss and the tears in her eyes showed unconditional love for the artist. Thus, their first hello was also their first goodbye.

Then, he came to a family that loved and took care of him like he was their own. According to another song of the artist, “I have a man that I call dad” and said that he raised him right.

And it gives me the idea that the family that raised him, turned him into the good man he is today. And the artist hopes that his mother knows that she did the right thing.
